We all dissociate in one way or another. It is the brain’s remarkably creative way of compartmentalizing pain so we can get on with life. While helpful in getting through a trauma, later in life dissociative habits can interfere with our ability to relate to our own feelings and experience.

Dissociation may involve symptoms of memory loss, difficulty focusing, feeling spacey or distracted, daydreaming or detachment from our bodies, sudden intense emotions from out of nowhere, or confusion about identity.

In therapy, you can learn to reconnect with these shut-off parts of yourself in order to lead a fuller life. Dissociation is treatable. It is possible to work with dissociative patterns and to work through the past events that led to current problems.
